The Sports Management Degree aims to train professionals with knowledge, abilities and skills in sports management to be applied in any sports-related company and public administration. Students will acquire the abilities to organise, manage, plan and evaluate sport and recreational activity programmes of a continuous and/or occasional nature in different professional, social and economic contexts.
This degree, the first of its kind in the Basque Country, is a response to the growing importance of sports management, administration and organisation as a career specialisation. In fact, the growth in the number of people practising sport has resulted in job opportunities in the sports industry for suitably qualified professionals with training tailored to the diverse roles offered by sports organisations.
A booming sector
The growth in the number of people practising sport has made Spain the fifth largest fitness market in Europe in terms of revenue. This ‘revolution’ will take the form of around 100 new sports facilities opening to the public over the next few years, serving a population of approximately 500,000 people. This is already translating into a growth in employment in the sports sector, which in 2022 reached 235,4000 people, representing an increase of 6.2 per cent over the previous year. In fact, it is one of the fastest evolving sectors in today’s labour market.

A market demanding specialisation
Applications to organise world sporting events, new sports products and e-sports related products have led to the specialisation of companies in this field, requiring professionals who combine sports and business management skills. Among the skills required for sports management, the latest reports have highlighted the need to incorporate the generations raised in technological, collaborative and constantly changing environments, able to contribute new ideas. Professionals with a strong background in economics, finance, business administration and marketing will be in demand.

A ground-breaking degree, with the Baskonia Group as a “partner”
The Sports Management Degree, the only one of its kind in the Basque Country and with only two similar degrees in the whole of Spain, responds to current requirements in the sports sector in society. The curriculum places special emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge related to IT and business management and administration. In this context, subjects related to new technologies and e-sports are included, along with management as an essential compulsory core. The association of the Baskonia group as a ‘partner’ of the university also adds the value of the professional experience of the most important sports clubs in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
