The World Health Organisation’s new Mental Health Atlas paints a picture of global failure to provide people with the mental health services they need, revealing a growing demand for support in this area. For this reason, this degree programme combines academic excellence with an interdisciplinary perspective and a focus on the current needs of society.
The Degree in Psychology aims to train professionals with a solid scientific and practical basis, capable of understanding, interpreting and analysing human behaviour, and developing skills to evaluate and intervene throughout the life cycle, covering the individual and social sphere, in order to promote and improve mental health and quality of life, integrating ethical and deontological approaches, and using advanced technologies and evidence-based practices.
As part of its curriculum, it offers the compulsory credits in clinical psychology (Major in Health Psychology), which are essential for students to be able to access postgraduate training in general health psychology as well as the opportunity to obtain one of the two proposed minors: the Minor in Educational Psychology and the Minor in Sports Psychology.
High demand for professionals
There is a growing demand for psychology professionals in today’s society, as mental health and psychological well-being become increasingly important aspects of our society. Current needs are diverse and growing in the social-health, educational, sports, occupational, community and legal spheres, as well as in other environments of enormous social interest such as crisis intervention in the event of major natural or man-made disasters, care for victims of violence and abuse and the study of the psychological impact of technologies and social networks on people, among others.
A sought-after profile with significant challenges
In Spain there is an average of six clinical psychologists per 100,000 inhabitants. A low number compared to the 12 professionals per 100,000 inhabitants that is considered optimal, according to WHO reports and considering the increase in demand. However, this sector faces significant challenges in the short and medium term, such as the integration of mental health into primary health care, the inclusion of mental health and psychosocial support in emergency preparedness plans and research on mental health.
High employability
Psychology offers a range of career opportunities in different contexts such as health, education, organisations and sport, among others. The average employment rate in the different studies carried out in relation to Psychology graduates is around 88%, making it one of the most in-demand specialisations in the clinical or health field. Furthermore, it is estimated that the overall employment of psychologists will grow by 10% in the next decade in our country alone.
