Podiatry is the MEDICAL SPECIALITY that studies the foot, its structure and functioning, malformations, pathologies, treatments and the prevention of conditions. The Podiatry Degree aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and qualifications necessary for the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of foot conditions and deformities. In addition to training in general aspects of the health sciences and different scientific methods, students will study the structure and function of the human body, with special attention to the lower extremities. Students will also acquire the necessary skills and abilities to perform podiatric, orthopaedic/podiatric and chiropodiatric treatments and podiatric surgery.
This degree, the only one of its kind in the Basque Country, responds both to the social demand for podiatric care and to the need for podiatry professionals who combine the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to play a unique role in the prevention and treatment of foot problems. Furthermore, the significant theoretical development and advances made by the profession warrant this qualification, which gives access to the regulated practice of podiatry.

Lack of specialised professionals
Foot health not only affects that particular part of the body, but also influences the rest of the locomotor system. The growing demand for the treatment and prevention of a whole range of pathologies requires specialised university professionals – of whom there are currently insufficient numbers – to attend to, for example, patients with diabetes mellitus (15% of whom are estimated to develop ulcers during their lifetime) or those with sports-related injuries (a third of which originate in the feet). This degree will enable the new professional podiatrist to adapt to societal demands with regard to health and quality of life, which are growing in parallel with improvements in the general healthcare of the population.
A unique degree in the Basque Country
This degree, the only one of its kind in the Basque Country, represents a substantial improvement in the training profile of podiatrists, with a greater acquisition of skills in the basic sciences, but also with an increase in the number of hours of clinical training for students, bringing it closer to the standards of countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia or the United States, where podiatrists’ skills are the most advanced in the world. In this context, EUNEIZ guarantees more than 60% practical hours at the EUNEIZ University Clinic. This academic programme addresses the societal demand for professionals with a university degree who can then go on to postgraduate studies to develop their profession and research in this particular area of healthcare.
High Employability
Podiatry is one of the most employable of the healthcare professions. Specifically, the report “Jóvenes Universitarios y Empleabilidad” (Young University Students and Employability) by Randstad Research and CEU states that employability in Spain in the podiatry sector is 96.9%. This high level of employability is directly related to social demand, which at the moment is mainly via the private sector, but is expected to increase in the public healthcare sector. In fact, diabetic foot units are already operating throughout the country, with podiatrists playing an important role in reducing the number of amputations, improving the quality of life of these patients and reducing the cost of their medical treatment.
