This Master’s program trains professionals in the evaluation, planning, and optimization of training, as well as in the application of evidence-based physiological strategies. It integrates knowledge in physiology, biochemistry, and nutrition to understand the mechanisms regulating exercise response and training adaptation from a comprehensive perspective focused on performance and health.

It also provides training in research methodologies and statistical tools to analyze data, evaluate arguments, and acquire scientific communication skills in the field of exercise physiology. With a strong research orientation and access to doctoral studies, this program offers comprehensive, interdisciplinary training to advance scientific knowledge and its application in sports and health.

The program consists of 60 ECTS credits, structured into four compulsory modules (11 subjects, 48 ECTS) and a Master’s Thesis (12 ECTS).

Target audience

The Master’s Degree in Advanced Exercise Physiology for Physical Performance and Health is designed as a specialization in the sports sector, specifically in the fields of elite sports and health-oriented sports. It is primarily aimed at graduates in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (CAFyD), given their prior training in exercise physiology, training, and adaptation to physical effort.

Additionally, graduates in Physiotherapy, Medicine, Nursing, Biology, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Biomedical Sciences are also eligible, provided they complete 6 ECTS credits of bridging courses before starting the program. These courses ensure a foundational understanding of exercise physiology and physical conditioning, enabling them to successfully engage with the program content.

Teaching activities, teaching methodologies, and assessment systems

How is learning structured?

The instructor will guide the student in a personalized manner throughout the learning process. Each subject includes a teaching plan specifying, based on the associated learning outcomes, the training activities and teaching methodologies. These include:

At the start of each subject, students will find on the platform all resources (reference materials and documentation), as well as tools for completing activities and acquiring knowledge, skills, and competencies. These will be complemented by in-person sessions scheduled on weekends.

The Master’s Degree in Advanced Exercise Physiology for Physical Performance and Health adopts a “learning by doing” approach, ensuring a balanced combination of theoretical and practical classes, with an emphasis on practical sessions during in-person meetings. The goal is for students to acquire knowledge and skills that they can apply concretely to design, develop, and implement functional projects.

The curriculum concludes with the presentation and defense of the Final Master’s Thesis, where students will demonstrate that they have acquired the competencies, knowledge, and skills expected of an official Master’s program granting access to doctoral studies.
